. . . the Slave Route project will give us a better understanding of the problems of  slavery, its origins, the slave system, the role of the descendants of slaves in neo-colonial and independent countries and, above all, the importance of historical awareness as an integral part of national identity in societies that experienced a system of social relations based on slavery in their formative years.
